Theory & hazard Perception Test

You need to PASS your Theory and Hazard Perception Test at the same time, before, you can apply for your Practical Test. You will need a valid provisional driving licence to take your test and you can book your Theory and Hazard Perception Test online.

You DO NOT however, need to have passed your Theory & Hazard Perception Tests, before taking driving lessons with Time 2 Pass

How the THEORY TEST works:

The theory test is a 50-question multiple-choice test. 
To pass you must answer 43 or more questions correctly within 57 minutes. Questions are chosen at random from a bank of over 1,000 questions, and you answer by touching the screen. During the test you have the option to skip questions and return to them later.

How the HAZARD PERCEPTION TEST works:

Immediately after your Theory Test, you'll watch a series of 14 one minute video clips, each showing potential hazards involving road conditions, pedestrians or road users.
There are 15 hazards to identify and you can score up to 5 points on each one, depending on how quickly you identify them. You need to score 44 out of 75 to pass - don’t worry it is not as tough as it sounds!

When you are ready to take the Practical Test, you can book you test online, see video (right) from the DSA. I will let you know when to apply, when your skills have reached the correct standard to ensure you have the best chance of passing.

On the day of your Practical Test I will make sure that we arrive in plently of time to ensure you can get yourself settled and calm. 
Before taking your test, you will be nervous, but this is to be expected.

The Driving Test is straightforward and has been designed to see if you can drive safely in different road conditions and that you have learned your highway code.

You will meet your examiner and he will then inform you of what he will expect from you. Firstly you will have an eyesight check and then your examiner will ask you two questions about carrying out vehicle safety checks. These questions will be taken from the Show Me Tell Me questions and we will practice and learn these during your tuition.

In your practical test, you have 40 minutes to demonstrate everything you have learned in your driving lessons. You will be asked if you wish to have your instructor with you in the car. I encourage this, as I will be able to see first hand any issues that arise. You need to show you can drive competently and safely in all kinds of driving situations. You'll be asked to do one reversing manoeuvre which we will have practised and possibly make a controlled stop. To pass, you will need to complete the test without any serious faults and with 15 or fewer minor errors.

Be prepared!
The current national average practical pass rate is around 43%, so it makes sense to be as prepared as possible. I will advise you when you are ready for the practical test and help you understand the main reasons why students fail to ensure you have the best chance of success.

As of the 4th October 2010 your practical driving test now includes a section of 'INDEPENDENT DRIVING".
In the independent driving section of your test, you'll be asked to drive for
about 10 minutes without step by step route directions from your examiner.
During your test you’ll have to drive independently by either following:

• traffic signs
• a series of directions
• a combination of both

To help you understand where you are going when following verbal directions, the examiner will show you a diagram.

It doesn't matter if you don't remember every direction, or if you go the wrong way - that can happen to the most experienced drivers.

Independent driving is not a test of your orientation and navigation skills. Driving independently means making your own decisions - this includes deciding when it’s safe and appropriate to ask for confirmation about where you’re going. We will work with this style of driving during your lessons.
